...hide the wimmin and chillins, Lance Berkman is gonna be a Yankee tomorrow. Astroland is atumble. Mikie is stunned. He's used to it, so we don't worry about him. Much.

Houston's close enough, I guess, 98 degrees here today with the heat index at 107. Lance will be in uniform for tonight's game in Tampa, and is expected to be the regular DH for that team, apparently they've had a revolving door at that position. Put him in the 2 slot in the order, and their lineup goes Jeter, Berkman, Texiera, Rodriguez, Cano, etc....or put Cano 2nd and Lance 5th, either way, ouch for whoever they're playing. Let's just say my rooting interests are in conflict, I hope Lance hits .400 and his team loses every game.
Watched J.A. Happ's Astros debut last night, love the guy. 6'6" lefty who works quickly and throws 93, what's not to like. Was sorry to see Roy O's debut with the Phils didn't go well, but he'll be alright. Tonight will be the MLB debut of Brett Wallace, the other main piece from the Oswalt deal, can't help but wonder what Jeff Bagwell will be thinking in the dugout tonight at Minute Maid when the PA says..."Playing first base for your Houston Astros, wearing number 29, Brett Wallace!"...
Saw a twitter post on the Astros' site that said, "Oswalt and Puma have an excellent chance to face each other in the World Series which quite frankly makes me feel a need to toss my cookies". Not sure I'd take it quite that far, but I can relate.

| I was completely floored by the Berkman trade. I knew Roy wanted out but didn't have any idea about Lance. I don't follow baseball that closely. Was this something sudden? |

It happened quickly, but was basically a long-term financial decision by the team. Lance's option for 2011 was $15 million, which given his performance this year and the push to trim payroll and get younger was not going to be picked up. The team also would not likely offer him arbitration, both because he wouldn't likely accept and if he did, he'd still command a huge salary. So, in either scenario, Lance would likely become a free agent at the end of this year and the team would get nothing if he signed elsewhere. So, the best they could do was get what they could for him now, which is why he didn't bring the level of prospects Roy did.
Hate to admit it, but I've actually been flipping between the Yankees-Rays and the 'Stros-Brewers this afternoon, and saw Lance get his first hit as a Yankee, he tattooed a line-drive single to right in his 3rd at-bat after going 0-fer-4 yeasterday. |

Its bad enough to see Lance in any uniform other than an Astros's, but a Yankee...bleck...tough year Mikie :-(
Of course half the Tribe's team is gone, but with their record what's the difference...

I will be going to see the Yankmees against the White Sox at the end of August. And I'm sorry, Mikie. Lance will get equal booing to everyone else.
I'd boo my mother if she wore a Yankee uniform. |

Now, that there's funny, I don't car who y'are!
Boo away, like I said, I hope Lance hits .400 and his team doesn't win another game from here on in.
Don't look now, but the 'Stros are 3-0 since Roy's departure, on a season-high 5-game winning streak overall, and only a half-game behind the Cubs for 3rd in the division. Most of that was against the Brew-ha-has, though, tonight we start a series in St. Louis, we'll see how this new-look team full of young guns fares against the big boys.

It would be just fine with me if you'd sweep them.

One down, two to go, the 'Stros are the hottest team in baseball, 6 in a row and we leapfrogged the Cubs into 4th, woohoo, only a couple behind the Brewers for 3rd. Never mind we're still 13 games out, I'm taking all the silver linings I can get at this point.
This Brett Wallace kid we got from the Blue Jays by trading one of the prospects we got from the Phils for Roy O. is looking good. He comes with the label of being a hitting machine, has torn up every level he's played at, and I can see why, he's got one of the quickest bats I've ever seen with a very smooth stroke, the proverbial "ball jumps off his bat" is overused but in his case it's true. He's kinda sluggish at first base, but he's got Jeff Bagwell as a teacher so I'm sure he'll improve.
I saw in the box scores that the Skankees batted Berkman 9th last night, I'd bet he's never batted 9th in his life going all the way back to t-ball. He's gotten a couple hits for them, not exactly hitting .400, but they haven't won a game since he joined them. Heh. |

You guys did good. You put the Reds back in first. Let's keep them there!
