Who else has seen this freakin' great movie?
Emma Stone is fantastic. In fact the whole cast is.
Allison Janney, Sissy Spacek, Cicely Tyson, Viola Davis.
See this movie before any other movie!

My wife wanted to see it, and we went a while ago. I thought it was fun ...
I think the whole "chocolate cake" thing was way overdone to be honest. I don't think it would have worked out they way they had it ... it wouldn't "protect" them at all ...
And, to be honest, I think the end was too simplistic. I don't think the writer girl could or should leave them there alone ... it would simply not be safe and the chances of an "accident" just way to high. She would HAVE to bring at least the two or three main characters with her to the north.
I liked it ... but it seemed too simplistic to me .... |

Xenon, can I ask how old are you?
I'm just old enough to remember those days, and black women were treated exactly that way.
IMO, let's not even have nominees for Best Actress! Just give the damn thing to Viola Davis.
But it's okay, Xenon. You is is kind. You is smart and you is important. |

I just moved into my 40s (42).
I think they probably got it right in how the black women were treated. That is not what I have a problem believing.
I don't think I believe the part that says "If we put in the book the chocolate pie story, that will protect us because then the leader of the pack will make sure no one thinks the book is about our town." Somehow I think that wouldn't have worked. As they had in movie, blacks might end up getting killed by accidents all the time at that time. I think the chocolate pie story would have made someone mad enough to accidently run her over in the dark one night or something like that.
I think our main writer character would have HAD to take at least the two leads with her to New York or something.
What I think was too simplistic was the idea that they could write the book and that there would be no long term consequences for the powerless. Yeah, our writer girl can up and move to New York and start her career as a writer, but I think the black servants would have lots of negative consequences that the end of the movie seems to just gloss over ...
My wife says the book actually covers that a bit better .... |

| I just saw the chocolate pie incident as a Sissy Spacek Oscar moment. A simple comic relief. |
